BS Indrakala - Pioneering Former Judge and Consumer Dispute Leader

A distinguished former judge of the high court of Karnataka, Justice BS Indrakala is known for her extensive contributions to the judiciary in India. With over four decades of experience in the Indian judiciary, she has served in various capacities, including principal judge of the family courts in Karnataka and chief judge of the court of small causes in Bangalore. Justice BS Indrakala earned a bachelor of science from Maharani College, University of Mysore, and a bachelor of laws from Sharada Vilas Law College of the same institution. She began her legal career under senior advocate T. V. Krishna Rao, where she focused on civil and labor law cases.

As one of the small number of women to ascend to the higher judiciary, Justice Shamachar Indrakala has contributed to legal reforms and participated in initiatives such as the Indo-British judicial sensitisation programme at the University of Warwick. She has also served as president of the state consumer dispute redressal commission in Karnataka, addressing consumer disputes. Since stepping away from the bench in 2019, she has pursued creative interests such as painting and knitting, while maintaining her connection to the legal field.
